Fall Table Top For Cheap

September 20th, 2011

I love the fall, but it’s sometimes hard to find fall decor in cool tones. Most fall decor–obviously–is in warm tones. I decorated my fall table for just under $25.

I found a pair of Ralph Lauren Home silvery/gray chevron print place mats at TJ Maxx for $1.99 each and silver chargers at Tuesday Morning for $2.98 for the pair.

I love these ostrich feather napkin rings in green, blue and brown tones and you can’t beat the price for under $5 each. I added them to black linen napkins for $3.49 each. All from Pier 1.

Antiques Chic and Cheap

September 18th, 2011

This Saturday my friend, Allison, and I hit one of the largest antique shows in the state in Springfield, Ohio. The show happens once a year and features hundreds and hundreds of antique dealers from primitive to mid-century modern.

I managed to find some great deals and a few ideas for future Chic et Cheap projects. Here’s what we found…

Antique shows are great places to find vintage Christmas decorations, including glass ornaments, bottle trees or real tinsel. I love these bright blue glittery ornaments that looked like new and the “sugar coated” vintage bulbs. I laugh out loud when I see the original price of $.48 on the box and 50 years later I am shelling out $12!

Everyone knows I love vintage barware and entertaining pieces from the 50′s and 60′s. I love these red and black high balls and metal tray. I snagged 12 glasses for $10 and the tray for just $3!

My friend scored this fabulously-chic solid cast iron horse head for $65. Any replica from Restoration Hardware would cost over $150. She was able to get the dealer down about $22 from the tag price–the woman was just glad she didn’t have to pack it back up.

One trend that was popular at the show was 18th century French chic. Inspirations of Marie Antoinette were everywhere! Here are some of my favorite finds.

Paintings, $8 each

I wish I had room for this chic armoire, after a few touch-ups of paint, it would look great in a dining room. I hope it went to a good home.

Credenza, $250

I bought these gold…well I don’t know what they are really, but let’s say, decorative pieces, hung from blue velvet for my office. The pair was just $10.

Blue and gold decorative wall hangings, $10 for the pair

The show had great furniture pieces for cheap. I just wish I had the room (and budget) for all of it! I lusted after this armoire for under $300. (Check out the chic the gold and black clock in the foreground)

I managed to get the wall hangings, 12 high balls, metal tray, a necklace and some fabric for just $65! A successful afternoon!

Chinese Chippendale for Cheap

March 28th, 2011

Chinese Chippendale chairs are very hot right now in home decor. What the hell is Chinese Chippendale, you ask? Well, Chinese Chippendale was created by famed English furniture designer, Thomas Chippendale (the first non-monarch to have a furniture style named for him). Chippendale was already famous for his mahogany furniture when he applied a chinoiserie (“Chinese-esq”) inspiration to his furniture.

Chinese Chippendale designs reflect the architectural details from Chinese temples and pavilions. The Chinese Chippendale chair became popular in mid-century design in bold, pop colors. The back of a Chippendale chair will have either a cross “T” or “Z” pattern.

Vintage chairs or reproductions can be pretty expensive, they will run you a few hundred per chair.

eBay pair, $175

I found a beat-up pair on eBay for $175. With a coat of some shiny bright paint or black or white lacquer these would look fab!

Personal note: My mother and I curse the day she sold a bamboo Chinese Chippendale chair at a garage sale. Proof that what’s old will be new again.

Design Trend: Driftwood

January 27th, 2011

Driftwood is essentially wood that has been washed onto a shore or beach of a sea or river by the action of winds, tides, waves or man and it has recently become insanely popular in home decor.

Driftwood decor pieces can be pretty pricey. So I would suggest creating your own inspirations using scrap pieces. One of my favorite online craft stores, Save-On-Crafts has 9 lbs of driftwood for around $29.

Loose driftwood at Save-on-Crafts.com, $29 (Natural or bleached)

Driftwood looks great just placed in a decorative bowl or in a group of woven baskets. Crate & Barrel has this chic driftwood mirror for under $200.

Crate & Barrel also sells this garland that can be used to create a similar mirror above.
